NYX Girls Nail Polish in Nude Truffle

I am always on the lookout for new nail polish colours and while making my weekly visit to Wonderful World realized that they brought in a new brand of Nail polishes by NYX. Wonderful world normally has China Glaze (my favourite), Sinful Colours, Orly, Kleancolour, LA Girl and LA Colours.
Lately I have been wearing a lot of bright colours so I chose something more neutral and back to my love for pink. The colour Nude Truffle 203 is absolutely gorgeous and is an everyday colour. It’s a bit sheer but 2 coats will give you an almost opaque colour. It’s the standard brush for the bottle and the formula is easy to apply.
Do I like it, love it, leave it or it’s just OK: Verdict- I love it. You can’t go wrong with soft pinks that look so natural and for such a good price, why not try more colours from NYX!
Price & Where to get this??? Wonderful world at $12 TT. Online shoppers can check at www.nyxcosmetics.com Happy Shopping Dolls!

Learning Beauty Week 3- Bridal Makeup & Basic Manicure Steps

Session 5: This is our last session of makeup. Boo hooo! But it ended with a bang; here we had to do bridal makeup for three different brides; a Christian bride, Hindu bride and African Bride.
The Christian bride’s makeup is based on her wedding theme colours. The Hindu bride has the traditional sari colours of red, yellow and white with gold accents. The African bride’s makeup has to match her colourful but earthly tones of her head piece.
I was selected as the model for the Hindu bride’s makeup. With time restraints we could only do the makeup to match the red sari. So for this one you can go all matchy matchy with red eye-shadow but this is so not recommended. You want to go with pinks and burgundy instead. So that’s what my classmates did for me. Pinks on the eyelid with burgundy on the outer corner and gold for the highlight. I am really not alone when it came to liquid eyeliner since they had problems applying just like me. So after repeated attempts, many smudges and fixes, it all came together. Here’s the final look.

Session 6: Our first class on nails and we learnt the steps to a proper manicure. Before we started we learnt how to properly set up our work station and etiquette of a nail salon.
Basic Manicure steps include:
1.      Remove old nail polish
2.      Ask client about desired nail shape
3.      Shape nail with file
4.      If stained buff off nail or use hydrogen peroxide
5.      Prepare finger bowl with warm water and add a few drops of antibacterial liquid soap
6.      Use cuticle remover around the cuticles and place hand in prepared finger bowl
7.      While the first hand is soaking repeat steps 1-4 on the other hand
8.      Remove first hand from finger bowl and dry with hand towel. Use cuticle pusher or orangewood stick to push back cuticles. Trim with cuticle nipper if necessary.
9.      Repeat step 8 on other hand
10.  Use nail brush and clean under nails and cuticle areas on both hands. Dry off.
11.  Apply cuticle oil and massage hand from elbow to fingernail with hand lotion. Note: The purpose of the massage is to send blood to the fingernail to ensure healthy nails
12.  Apply nail polish remover to clean off grease from nails
13.  Apply base coat, then polish
14.  Apply nail art design if desired
15.  Seal off with top coat
While the steps itself looks a bit much for a beginner, it is actually quite simple and can be done within 45-60 minutes. The hardest part for me was trying to do the massage but practice makes perfect. I’m off to practice on my mom!

OH, OH, OH My MAC!

So this was another item I purchased from the recent MAC me over collection. It is a lustre lipstick and is a sort of plumy bronzy colour all wrapped up in one bundle of joy. Did I mention I am crazy about MAC lipsticks? Well I am so much a pink girl so branching out into new colours is something I forced myself to do and hence the choice of this colour over the gorgeous pink one called Offshoot.
The colour itself I am not crazy about but it is something that you can wear everyday without your lips screaming for attention. I do find myself having to reapply though very often. But overall it is consistent with the quality of Mac lustre lipsticks.
While I have never had any regrets with any MAC products I do wish I had bought Offshoot instead. At least I would have had my pink and all would be well in my world.  Give it a try though; it just might be your cup of tea! I’m off to find a new pink cup!

I’m Singing the Blues, MAC Midnight Blues

The limited edition MAC fluidline in Midnight Blues is from their recent Mac Me Over collection. I really love the dark blue colour which also looks like it has some teal colour in it. It is a gel eyeliner and comes in a cute glass pot with a black lid. I’m a sucker for great packaging. Besides being an eyeliner, it can also be used as a base for blue eyeshadows. I’m also a sucker for multiuse products.

For me the best way to wear this is with a neutral eye (soft, warm brown or peach) for this liner to remain the star attraction of the look. And yes of course you must wing it!

It doesn’t take long to dry so I prefer these gel liners over the liquid ones and this formula stays put on the eye.
I got my Midnight Blues at West Mall here in Trinidad for TT$150 and it’s probably sold out by now. It's also sold out online but you can try Waveline which is a navy blue for US $15 at http://www.maccosmetics.com/
How would you wear blue eyeliner?

Shopping Online Experience with Coastal Scents

So being the avid online shopper I decided to try my luck with Coastal Scents since this brand is growing in its popularity here in Trinidad. In particular their eye-shadow palettes have been popping up everywhere and so far I have only heard great things about them. (Me… jumping onto bandwagon)
The site itself is eye catching in design and easy to navigate. I had no problems signing up as a first time customer and inputting the standard information required to make my purchases. I love the fact that they allow customer reviews so you can hear the good, the bad and the ugly.
So instead of buying what we already have here I wanted to try out something new. Item number one in cart is their new Go Palette Cairo. I feel a bit daring now since there were no reviews on these yet but if they are made with the same quality like the popular large eye-shadow palettes then I shouldn’t have a problem right? We will review later!
Next hopper into my cart went the recently back in stock 22 piece brush set. I am totally in love with makeup brushes now, so I just had to get these! And I did hear many good things about their brushes based on the customer reviews on the website. Great deal for the price anyways!
At this point my eyes are going up and down, left and right reviewing item after item, after item. And my credit card is saying “What’s next already, Charge me”!  So I caved in and ordered a passion berry lip quad. I really wanted to try out their gel eyeliners which come in a variety of colours but the customer reviews were a bit mixed on these so I passed until some other time.
At checkout, I didn’t know I had to pay Vat which was additional to the prices of the items but it wasn’t much so I just got over it.  So order placed and then I go to check my email address and there is the notification of my order listing all 3 items above at the prices indicated on the site. BTW the value of my items was just slightly over US$50 so I got free shipping!

Now going back to the website and my account, the order is in there and the status reads processing. By the next day I log in again and now the status reads shipped! I’m impressed since I just choose the standard shipping method which is usually the slowest.

Now came the annoying part, the tracking number on my order is sent to me via email and it does show up on my coastal scents account also but after 6 days there is still no information on where is my package! I am a bit disappointed at that since I just love seeing my package move from place to place until it reaches my Miami address. Ah well. L But within a week my package is with me in Trinidad. Just for info, I did go back and recheck and the tracking number was still saying no information available.

So my package is received nicely packaged in a box (Priority Mail from the USPS). The brush roll is within a plastic wrap bag, the eye-shadow palette and lip quad is wrapped firstly in bubble wrap and then in paper. The lip quad is also in a cute green pull string bag with a lip brush. As gifts with my order I receive a cute baby kabuki brush as well as blush sample. Who doesn’t love free stuff!
So overall I was happy with the fact that everything I ordered arrived in good condition, pretty fast and with free samples. Coastal scents can expect my second order soon! Now on to try out my new stuff.

Think Pink- Revlon for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and our local Revlon is promoting this month with a free T-shift with your purchases of Revlon products. Part of the proceeds goes to support for breast cancer.
So for me I opted to purchase my Revlon products at my favorite Pennywise branch in Trincity Mall. The beautiful Revlon representative there briefly explained the promotion to me before proceeding to assist me with choosing the right products for my mom and I. All we needed to spend was $125 in Revlon products which is so not hard to do!
I use Revlon’s Colorstay face powder in medium deep but choose to try out some of their other items. I am in a lippie phase at the moment so I choose their Colorburst lipgloss in Hot Pink. For my mom, the Colorburst lipstick in Soft Rose was the ideal everyday shade. To complete my order I tried something new so went for the Colorstay Mineral finishing powder in Suntan Matte to use as a highlighter and then their Antiqued Gold eyeliner pencil with built in smudger. I really loved the fact that their rep was extremely helpful, absolutely knowledgeable about all the products and provided us with the best customer service I ever got in this store!!!!!!
Once I paid for my items (and of course a few more non-Revlon products) this cute pink T-shirt was all mines! Pink has always been my favourite colour. So this month I will be rocking my new T. You choose whichever way suits you best to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Just Think Pink!

Learning Beauty Week 2- Practicing Makeup

I was excited to begin my next 2 sessions since here was my chance to see what I could do. Our tutor told us to go home and practice after week one and this was what I did. Actually I did a bit more in that I re-read my notes, reorganized my makeup and setup a station a home for my practice. It’s a good thing there are 4 other ladies at home to be my models. But of course I model for myself too!

For me the hardest part is doing the liquid eyeliner. I so need more practice here!
Session 3: This was my practice session where I got to makeover my beauty partner. I used similar colours like I used on myself above and it turned out pretty well. Too bad I don’t have pictures to show off my work L
Session 4: This was our time to do makeup on ourselves to showcase for our tutor. We were all given what colours to wear by her and we were to make it suitable for an evening out. So yes I was a bit nervous to work with blue eyeshadows since I am usually a neutral eye kinda girl but it turned out great!

For the nighttime you want to go bold and bright as possible. With such strong colours you may want to skip the blush though. When I was done she showed me how to make the eyes pop with a bright colour underneath. Even though this is way too much makeup than I am used to, I really loved it.

Looking forward to week 3!

Purple China Glaze Crackle Nails

Have you ever been in a purple phase? I seem to be having this phase now for more than 2 months where everything I want needs to be purple.
So once again my wonderful world provides me with the tools to make my needs a reality. I started off with China Glaze’s Spontaneous which is a mid-tone purple. I should have stopped there but no…. I continued on with China Glaze’s crackle in Fault Line.

Now I have to admit that the crackle cracks nicely enough with a light coat. The formula is a bit thicker to work with even though this was a brand new bottle. But for some reason I wasn’t impressed. I am thinking it’s because the two purples didn’t give enough contrast to appreciate the crackle effect. I would probably just repeat with a lighter colour underneath or see if I can find the crackle metal polishes instead.
P.S. The crackle polish was $38TT in Wonderful world while the normal china glaze goes for $30TT. Check out www.chinaglaze.com to see all their colours.

It’s In My Bag Now: ELF Beauty Book Cool Collection

So my bag usually has a ton load of stuff in it and never enough room (remind me to check out the kangaroo keeper) so I never want to add any more bulky items to it but I really needed a small makeup palette. Along came the beauty book. It has 28 eyeshadows and 20 lip colours. The magnetic strip that allows it to close like a book is great, but just for safety when it’s in the bottom of my bag I add a cute hair band to ensure it doesn’t open. These eyeshadows are a mixture of semi-matte, and shimmery colours. To prevent eyeshadow particles from sticking to your lippie colours just add a small piece of tissue to separate the two sections when closed.  The only downside is no browns for neutral looks so I am still on the lookout for a palette for suffice all my needs. In case you’re wondering there is a warm collection beauty book with browns but I wasn’t impressed with the eyeshadow colour variations in this one.
For the lip colours you have some that has the sheer colour payoff of a lipgloss and the dark colours with a bit more pigmentation of a lipstick. I tend to reach for the medium pinks in the book.
Do I like it, love it, leave it or it’s just OK: Verdict- I love it!  Super great for work and play, hardly takes up any space in your handbag. I take it everywhere I go.  Even my coworkers want to get this.
Price & Where to get this??? ELF website for 5US$ or Magical Makeup in Trincity Mall for TT$60. You may want to also check out the ELF cosmetics Trinidad group on FB. Happy Shopping Dolls!
